What "free" really costs
The big-marketplace model (OpenTable) combines a monthly subscription with a per-cover fee on diners who find you through its network — commonly cited at ~£0.50–£2 per cover, with some venues reporting £2 (verify on OpenTable's plans page; figures verified June 2026). Like the delivery apps, it's a cut for sending you a customer — useful for discovery, costly on repeats. Many alternatives (and platform-native bookings) charge a flat fee with no per-cover cost. Neither is automatically better; just know which model you're signing.
